The word “church” first appears in the New Testament, which was originally written in Greek.

Using the principle of first mention, we’d examine Matthew 16:18.

“And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” – Matthew 16:18

The Greek word used here is “ekklēsia,” which means:

· A gathering of citizens called out from their homes into some public place,

· An assembly of people convened at the public place of the council for deliberation.

In English, two words best define the church: “gathering” and “assembly.”

Therefore, we can define a church as a gathering or assembly of people with the same biblical beliefs.

Despite God’s omnipresence, attending church is crucial for several reasons:

· The Church is a place to learn about life:
Jesus created the church (Matthew 16:18) and regularly taught the Word of life in synagogues. His disciples continued this practice, teaching people about life in churches after His ascension.

· Mutual encouragement:
The beauty of church is that strong believers can strengthen the weak, and the weak can find support among the strong. This mutual encouragement is a vital aspect of church life.

· It’s a commandment from God:
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together…” – Hebrews 10:25.
This clear instruction from God emphasizes the importance of gathering with fellow believers.

· It keeps our hearts soft:
Church attendance helps prevent our hearts from becoming hardened by sin.
“…but exhort one another every day, as long as it is called today, that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” – Hebrews 3:12-13

· It’s where we receive Spiritual gifts:
Spiritual gifts are given for the body of Christ (the church) to minister to one another according to grace.

· Access to Godly mentorship:
The church is where we find mentors with a Kingdom mindset.
Titus 2:2-6 outlines how older men and women should teach and guide younger generations in godly living.

That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. The aged women, likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.” – Titus 2:2-6

While God is indeed everywhere, attending church is not merely about fulfilling a religious obligation.

It’s a vital component of spiritual growth and community.

Church provides a unique space for learning, encouragement, obedience to God, heart softening, spiritual gifting, and mentorship.

These elements contribute significantly to personal and spiritual development, making church attendance an essential practice for believers.
